About Dog Mange
There are a few different types of Dog Mange that can affect Dogs:
- Demodectic (Red Mange, Demo Mange, Demodex, Canine Demodectic Mange)
- Sarcoptic (Sarcoptes)
- Cheyletiella (Walking Dandruff)
In order to properly treat your dog for mange, it is very important that you understand the differences between these types of dog mange.
Demodectic Mange is commonly referred to as Red Mange, Demodex Canis, Demo Mange, Puppy Mange or Demodex Mange. This type of mange is not contagious, but it has the ability to spread quickly and produce a septic smell caused by secondary bacterial infections. If your puppy has mange, chances are he has demo mange.
Sarcoptes scabei Dog Mange is the less serious, yet highly contagious, type of itch mange. Sarcoptic mange, aka "Scabies," has zoonotic potential, which means it's the mite you can get from your pet! Mange in humans is called scabies and is easier to get rid of.
Sarcoptic Mange is much easier to cure because the Sarcoptic mite doesn't penetrate as deep into the hair follicle of your pet. These mites still causes intense itching, followed by flaky or scabby dandruff and loss of hair. Infection is not usually associated with this type of mange; however if the skin is torn from intense scratching, a bacterial infection can be present. Cheyletiellosis is a mild skin condition caused by the Cheyletiella species of mites. Cheyletiella mange is also known as walking dandruff because the mites resemble a bad case of dandruff found on the neck and back usually. Cheyletiella are large mites that live on epidermal layers of canines, cats, rabbits and humans. They do not burrow into the skin but live in the keratin level. Does My Dog Have Mange?
Most diagnoses are based on spotting the symptoms of the mange mite burrowing into the skin or hair follicles rather than catching a sighting of a mite itself. The mites are tiny and cannot normally be seen by the naked eye, so this can make diagnosis rather difficult, although there are ways around this.
What Does Pet Mange Look Like?

(Depending on Internet speeds, magnified images may take longer to load) A skin scraping of the areas believed to be where the mange mites are, can show some indications of mange in your pet. However, if the mites have burrowed further down than the skin scraping goes, the sample will not show any evidence of mites on the pet. Once the sample has been taken, it will need to be closely analyzed and inspected under a microscope to determine any infection caused by the burrowing, and also to check if any mites are actually present on the animal.
A skin inspection will also need to have taken place, by taking a closer look at the areas in which mites or their symptoms are normally found, to see if there is any sign of wounds that could be caused by mites. These areas include the ears, abdomen, and leg joints.
There is another type of diagnosis that can be performed for dogs and is commonly called the "Pedal-Pinna Reflex". Despite its complicated sounding name, it is actually very simple. By stimulating and lightly scratches the animal's ear to see if it will raise one of his or hers hind leg to scratch the area. If done correctly, this can give a correct diagnosis of mites and mange in 95% of all cases.
There are some pretty basic symptoms you can look for if you think your pet has mange. These include any hair loss in unusual places on the body, inflammation of the skin, and also broken or infected skin due to constant scratching resulting from the intense itch caused by the mites burrowing, feeding, and breeding on and in the animal's skin. Also, in moderate to severe cases of mange, while the mites are nearly impossible to see, the evidence of their activity is visible to the naked eye. There are important facts you should know about administering Ivermectin orally when treating for Mange. Did you know that it is not recommended by the FDA?
We thought we would share some important information on Ivermectin and using it to treat for Mange.
Ivermectin is a broad spectrum anti-parasite medication generally used for food animals and horses.
In dogs and cats, it is licensed for use as a heartworm preventive and as a topical ear mite therapy; the use of this medication to treat demodicosis is not approved by the FDA.
When ivermectin was a new drug, it was hoped that it could be used against demodectic mange mites as at that time, only labor intensive dipping was available for treatment. Once it was discovered that daily doses are needed (most other parasites can be controlled with warming spaced several weeks apart) ivermectin was found to be highly effective, quickly becoming the treatment of choice.
Ivermectin is inexpensive relative to Milbemycin and involves no labor intensive bathing. It DOES, however, taste terrible if given orally (it may be necessary for the owner to learn how to give ivermectin as an inject able treatment.).
WARNING: Ivermectin suppresses your pet's immune system, which will leave your pet susceptible as an opportunic host to infection. Generally, when Ivermectin is prescribed, propholactic anti-biotics are prescribed in conjunction with the Ivermectin. It is not uncommon for your pet to have a relapse when taken off the Ivermectin.
This medication is not safe for use in Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs, Australian Shepherds, Old English Sheepdogs, and some would say an herding breed.
