About Psoriasis Psoriasis is a inflammatory skin condition that affects about 7.5 million Americans and approximately 2-3 percent of the world's population. Although Psoriasis is not contagious, it is a lifelong battle for those individuals that have it. There are 5 main types of Psoriasis that occur, each with unique signs and symptoms: - Plaque
- Guttate
- Inverse
- Pustular
- Erythrodermic
It is important to understand that each of these types of Psoriasis may be very different. While 80% of Psoriasis cases are Plaque Psoriasis and can be treated by Psoriasil, the remaining 20% may have factors that require special or additional treatment methods. There are five different types of psoriasis: plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, inverse psoriasis and erythrodermic psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis accounts for about 80 percent of psoriasis cases, and causes patches of rough, red skin covered by white scales. Guttate psoriasis consists of many small, red spots all over the body, while pustular psoriasis consists of red skin with lots of white pustules. Erythodermic psoriasis causes severe pain and itching, and manifests as widespread skin redness. Inverse psoriasis consists of red lesions in various skin folds that are generally smooth rather than flaky. Psoriasis generally appears between the ages of 15 and 35, although some cases appear during childhood and even in infancy. Along with the visible skin patches, psoriasis causes itching, skin irritation and fissures, bleeding and possible infection. It can also cause embarrassment and other personal issues because of the physical appearance of their skin. Psoriasis is most often found on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back area. It can occur on any part of the body, however, and can often be found on areas where skin rubs together. Psoriasis is a chronic medical condition, and there is no cure. But there are many options to treat the symptoms, including topical creams, sprays and biweekly shots to suppress the immune system.
